Microelectromechanical systems (MEMS) audio chip maker xMEMS Labs has introduced two reference designs to accelerate the adoption of solid-state micro speakers.

The first unit, dubbed Harding, is a reference design for two-way true wireless stereo (TWS) earbuds and the second refence design is intended for audiophile-level full range in-ear monitors (IEMs). Both units are designed to give companies a starting point to bring all-silicon, monolithic MEMS micro speaker-based audio devices to the consumer electronics market.

The Harding reference design for TWS earbuds includes Cowell, a solid-state micro speaker that servers as the tweeter for realistic mids and highs. It is paired with a custom-built 9 mm dynamic driver woofer for bass. The active noise canceling (ANC)-ready design also embeds the Qualcomm Bluetooth Audio system-on-chip (SoC) and three microphones per earbud for noise cancelation.

xMEMS said the reference design has all the needed components to provide companies with a smooth transition from legacy coil speakers to all-silicon micro speakers in these TWS consumer devices.

Meanwhile, the IEM reference design includes xMEMS’ full-bandwidth transducer Montara Plus for sound pressure levels up to 120 dB at 200 Hz. The USB-C IEM design embeds a high-resolution audio digital to audio converter from Synaptics and a voice microphone for calling and support.
