The LoRaWAN Alliance has unveiled its annual end of the year report for 2024 highlighting the technological achievements from the past year including the development of more than 350 million end nodes and 6.9 million gateways deployed through private and enterprise deployments.
Of these deployments, LoRaWAN Alliance touted its deployment into major brands' IoT connections including:
- Starbucks
- Volvo
- Chevron
- Chick-fil-A
- Logitech
The Alliance also enhanced its certification program to make it easier and cost-effective to certify. This includes the LoRaWAN Web Certification System and Certification Test Tool that offers new self-certification options.
“Backed by our global ecosystem, we are making Massive IoT a reality and are rapidly scaling deployments,” said Alper Yegin, CEO of the LoRa Alliance. “The future is bright for LoRaWAN and as an Alliance we will remain focused on expanding our ecosystem, continuing to educate the market and build awareness, as well as ongoing technology enhancements to the standard to accelerate adoption.”
Individual deployments
Among the 350 million end nodes deployed in 2024, Alliance members reported:
- 4 million connected LoRaWAN devices from Actility
- 2.7 million connected devices from The Things Industries
- 9 million devices deployed by Zenner
LoRa future
According to market research firm Omdia, LoRaWAN will help to drive low power wide area network (LPWAN) connections beyond 3.5 billion by 2030. As of June 2024, more than 350 million end nodes and 6.9 million gateways with LoRa semiconductors deployed globally.
“Although NB-IoT is the leading LPWAN technology, over 90% of its connections are in China,” said Shobhit Srivastava, senior principal analyst at Omdia. “Outside China, LoRaWAN remains the leading LPWAN connectivity technology due to years of unchallenged growth and momentum. LoRaWAN, with its alliance-driven approach, boasts a mature ecosystem that allows customers to choose from a range of partners and application-specific experts.”
Additionally, LoRaWAN’s future is bright due to its differentiated offerings, Srivastava said.
