Intel Corp. continues to struggle financially. As it looks for ways to save money, the company said it will spin off its 3D vision and depth/tracking technology wing RealSense into a standalone company.
However, according to news from The Robot Report, Intel confirmed the decision as part of a strategic move to enhance the growth potential of RealSense and not as a reaction to Intel’s financial challenges. The spin off is a better alternative than shuttering the company as Tom’s Hardware said was initially one of the rumored plans.
“No. Intel is executing this spinout because we believe in the value of the company and are confident in its success as a standalone company,” Intel said in the report. “This decision aligns with our ongoing transformation and will help us further align to our strategic goal of focusing on our core businesses.”
RealSense is expected to maintain its product roadmap and will continue to support its customers. Additionally, RealSense will remain part of Intel’s Capital portfolio.
Currently, RealSense’s portfolio develops AI-powered computer vision modules for robotics, consumer electronics and communications. These include:
- Depth cameras
- Facial authentication solutions
- Autonomous mobile robot modules
- Physical therapy metrics
Intel said the standalone company will expand its roadmap to include stereo vision, robotics and biometrics AI software and hardware.
