Intel Corp. has introduced a new volumetric-measurement software based on the Intel RealSense lidar camera L515 that is designed to measure packages and pallets quickly to improve logistics.
Called the Dimensional Weight Software (DWS), the volumetric-measurement solution scans and calculates the measurement and volume of an object in seconds, allowing for real-time decision-making across receiving, inventory management and shipping without disruption to the process.
The RealSense L515 lidar camera is a tiny high-resolution imagining device that has depth quality with 23 million depth points per second, allowing for logistics measuring at near (0.8 m) and far (4 m) range and it works for boxes as small as 5 cm3 to full-size pallets.
Manual object measurement and analysis comes with the risk of inaccuracies being introduced due to human errors. Automated volumetric measurements of shipments help keep track of inventory and transportation processes with improved optimization.
Additionally, DWS allows enhanced billing accuracy, aids in warehouse management and helps increase workflow efficiencies with millimeter measurements. Companies can create systems that manage inventory in a variety of ways, from scanning items to understanding available quantities of a product, Intel said.
