Micron begins sampling next-gen GDDR7 graphics memory

08 June 2024

Micron Technology Inc. has begun sampling its next-generation GGDR7 graphics memory for gaming using its 1β (1-beta) DRAM technology.

The memory could be used for a spectrum of applications like artificial intelligence (AI), gaming and high-performance computing workloads.

The GDDR7 features:

  • 32 Gb/s high performance memory
  • 1.5 TB/s of system bandwidth
  • Four independent channels
  • 50% power efficiency
  • Sleep mode reduces power by 70%

Additionally, the memory increases throughput by up to 33% and reduces response time by up to 20% for generative AI workloads such as text to image creation.

Micron said it expects graphics cards built with the GDDR7 memory will provide greater than 30% improvement in frames per second for ray tracing and rasterization over current GDDR6 and GDDR6X across 1080p, 1440 and 4K resolutions. For gaming applications, the memory allows for AI-enhanced gaming with adaptable landscapes, players and storylines.
