Looking to curb noise levels in emerging urban aircraft like air taxis and delivery drones, NASA’s Advanced Air Mobility division is working with electric vertical takeoff and landing (eVTOL) vendor Moog to study the levels of noise over cities.
Noise levels are concerning due to restrictions in airspace for consumers who live in apartments and homes in cities. As air taxis and delivery drones continue to grow in use, the noise produced from these aircraft must be monitored.
NASA is working with the private sector to gather data on air taxis and other aircraft to find ways to reduce noise impacts.
The NASA research focuses on developing design tools to reduce noise impacts and testing to improve aircraft design as well as help in the acceptance of eVTOLs in communities as well as the establishment of locations for vertiports that will appease noise ordinances while making it convenient for consumers.
NASA’s work is supported by the Revolutionary Vertical Lift Technology (RVLT) project, part of NASA’s Advanced Air Vehicles Program, which is used to create safe and affordable new air transportation along with private vendors, community partners and the Federal Aviation Administration.
