General Motors will include vehicle-to-home (V2H) bidirectional charging technology in its portfolio of Ultium-based electric vehicles (EVs) starting with model year 2026.

GM previously announced its model year 2024 Chevrolet Silverado EV, GMC Sierra EV, Chevrolet Blazer EV, Chevrolet Equinox EV, Cadillac Lyriq and Escalade IQ will include the V2H technology. Additional Ultium-based EVs will be added to the V2H portfolio in the coming years.

V2H technology allows EV users to transfer energy from their vehicles to a properly equipped home when needed. This would help consumers to store and transfer energy to help offset electricity needs during peak demand days. The technology could also mitigate the impact of power outages or be very useful during natural disasters.

Previously, GM participated in a pilot project in California with utility provider PG&E to test the role of bidirectional V2H charging as a way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and help consumers with home electricity bills.

The V2H technology will be compatible through GM Energy’s Ultium home offerings and the GM Energy Cloud to manage the transfer of energy between applicable and connected GM Energy assets and the home, GM said.

“GM Energy's growing ecosystem of energy management solutions will help accelerate GM’s vision of an all-electric future by further expanding access to even more benefits that EVs can offer," said Wade Sheffer, vice president, GM Energy. “By integrating V2H across our entire Ultium-based portfolio, we are making this groundbreaking technology available to more consumers, with benefits that extend well beyond the vehicle itself, and at broader scale than ever before.”
