32-bit Arduino Uno single board computers unveiled

Open-source single board computer vendor Arduino has unveiled two new 32-bit versions of its Uno developer board targeted at internet of things (IoT) projects.

The two boards are powered by 32-bit microcontrollers: the basic Uno R4 Minima; and the Uno R4 Wi-Fi. Both boards are in the standard form factor, shield compatibility and have a 5V power supply like the Uno R3 but with up to 16 times clock speed, memory and flash storage and upped performance with the RA4M1 processor from Renesas.

The RA4M1 processor is based on the Arm Cortex-M4 core with a clock speed of 48 MHz and is fitted with 32 kB of SRAM and 256 kB of flash memory.

The board also features:

  • CAN bus for connecting multiple shields
  • 12-bit analog DAC
  • Operational amplifier

The UNO R4 Wi-Fi version has a Espressif ESP32-S3 module for Wi-Fi and Bluetooth Low Energy connectivity.

Arduino said the single board computers allow for creation of projects without soldering, breadboards or manual wiring. However, for engineers with more experience, there are additional pins to turn off the MCU while keeping the RTC powered by an external buffer battery.

The company said it has no plans to discontinue the Uno R3 and plans to offer both Uno R3 and Uno R4 boards to developers to ensure maximum backward compatibility with existing code examples and tutorials.
