Officials in Shanghai, China, have officially opened 303 public above-ground roads and two expressway sections for the testing of autonomous vehicles.
According to a report from Gasgoo, the roads were opened in early November and reached about 500.6 kilometers in distance. This includes:
- 459.6 kilometers of urban roads
- 21.5 kilometers of the G1503 Ring Expressway
- 19.5 kilometers of the G2 Beijing-Shanghai Expressway
The roads are in the Jiading District of Shanghai and are open for autonomous driving tests to companies looking to test next generation automated vehicles.
More smart roads coming
Shanghai has opened a total of 926 test roads spanning about 1,800 kilometers and 15,000 autonomous driving test-use scenarios.
By 2025, the government aims to have more than 800 kilometers of smart highways and smart city roads as well as 500 smart intersections citywide. The city plans to build more than 100 demonstrative smart public parking lots with 300 registered spots and super-large lots with more than 1,000 registered spots.
