Advancement in location-based services testing for 5G NR realm

An advancement in location-based services (LBS) testing has just been announced by technology solutions provider Rohde & Schwarz and fabless semiconductor company MediaTek: The two companies have successfully verified positioning features for 5G NR as defined by 3GPP Release 16. The features will improve emergency caller location and support upcoming LBS-related use cases in challenging indoor and outdoor environments, including satellite-based and terrestrial technologies.

Source: Rohde & SchwarzNR positioning reference signals (NR-PRS) are central to network-based positioning features such as roundtrip time (RTT), time difference of arrival in uplink (UL-TDOA) and downlink (DL-TDOA), and angle of arrival and (AoA) and departure (AoD). A new option for the R&S TS-LBS — a Rohde & Schwarz test system for testing network-based and global navigation satellite system (GNSS) positioning — supports these features, enabling mobile device and chipset manufacturers, test houses and network operators to carry out chipset and mobile device verification for various certifications with a single test solution.

According to Rohde & Schwarz, the R&S TS-LBS is designed for positioning based on satellite, cellular and hybrid technology, and it is highly configurable for testing different location technologies. It fulfills the requirements of LBS conformance testing and operator acceptance testing on GSM, WCDMA, LTE and 5G devices and chipsets.

The system consists of an R&S SMBV100B GNSS simulator and a one-box signaling tester (R&S CMX500 OBT) to serve as a network simulator. The latter device, billed as a future-proof solution for 5G NR testing, provides full network simulation capabilities, including support for multiple 4G or 5G cells at a time. It also provides LBS assistance data to the device under test (DUT) while the R&S SMBV100B provides GNSS satellite simulation. The test system can be used for R&D-related pre-conformance tests and to obtain GCF and PTCRB certification as well as network operator-specific certification acceptance and validated tests.
