3D magnetometer sensor for battery-powered appliances

Melexis has introduced a 3D magnetometer that features low signal-to-noise ratio in combination with a low 7 nA power down current for battery powered devices for both consumer electronics and industrial applications.

The MLX90397 is a 16-bit, three-axis sensor device that has a magnetic field range reaching 50 mT. The sensing element uses a Triaxis 3D Hall effect technology that is converted into a digital form and then transferred over an I2C interface.

The sensor can be used for applications including:

  • Handheld power tools
  • Gaming consoles
  • Computer peripherals
  • Home automation systems
  • Energy metering
  • Controls on domestic appliances

The sensor includes an SNR of 2 µT for a 50 mT range and a wide voltage supply range of 1.7 V to 3.6 V for battery applications. The adaptive BZ field range up to 200 mT simplifies customer designing with a back bias magnet.
