SK Innovation will spin off its battery business, including those used in electric vehicles, as an independent company to attract new businesses and investment.

The new company will be tentatively called SK Battery Co. Ltd., SK said it aims to be a global top player in the battery market.

Currently, the company holds an annual battery production capacity of 40 GWh, producing from various countries such as South Korea, the U.S., China and Hungary. The goal of the newly spun off company is to increase production capacity to:

  • 85 GWh by 2023
  • 200 GWh by 2025
  • 500 GWh by 2030

A recent joint venture with Ford Motors and SK is helping to drive the move to increase production capacity as well as the move from automakers to transition to primarily selling EVs starting in 2030.

Additionally, the company plans to expand the battery application market to products such as energy storage, flying cars, robots and provide battery-as-a-service platforms for new growth engines.
