Vision system with AI defect detection

09 September 2020

The FH Series Vision system has been developed by Omron as the industry’s first defect detection artificial intelligence (AI) technology that identifies defects without learning samples. The technology is said to reliably detect defects that were once difficult to capture, automating human vision-based visual inspection by reproducing the techniques of skilled inspectors.

A new AI-based image filter reproduces the technique that skilled inspectors use to identify a defect on any product background. Scratches and blemishes that were once difficult to capture can now be identified even Source: OmronSource: Omronwithout the use of samples or adjustment.

The system can determine acceptable variation tolerances as an AI fine matching tool learns from the image data of non-defective products to quickly acquire the expertise that inspectors develop over time. This reduces costs and over detection, and boosts productivity through automation.

The lightweight solution is integrated into a system component and no dedicated AI engineer is required for setup and adjustment at manufacturing sites. The labor-saving automated visual inspection series is of particular utility now when personnel may need to avoid working in the same space in order to protect them from COVID-19.
