Understanding UL 508A, the standard for industrial control panels

UL 508A, the Standard for Industrial Control Panels, is the premier document for designing and constructing industrial control panels for compliance with the National Electrical Code. Recently, UL 508A had a series of revisions which became effective July 1, intended to help it keep up with the fast pace of technological development in the world of industrial automation. Understanding and applying current requirements and revisions is essential to meet customer needs and market demands.

1. Know when revisions to the standard will take effect

In the past, future effective dates were embedded in the standard. Now, future effective dates for UL 508A are referenced here: UL 508A – Future Effective Dates. This will help facilitate faster and more streamlined notifications of revisions.

2. Understand and apply those revisions to meet market demands

The most recent revisions that became effective July 1 are outlined in the Third Edition of UL 508A. To support customers’ understanding of the revision to the new edition, a complimentary on-demand webinar is available to gain an insider's look at the detailed changes relevant to the new UL 508A Third Edition.

UL also has a summary of requirements document providing a tool that makes it easy for users of UL 508A to determine a path to compliance with the new and revised requirements.
