Fixed wireless access (FWA) is one of the first use cases for 5G that has emerged outside of cellular smartphones and will serve as a replacement or a competitor for home and business broadband fiber, cable and DSL.
The first FWA solutions are offered in the lower bands of the wireless spectrum. However, as millimeter wave (mmWave), the higher band of the 5G spectrum, becomes ubiquitous, it will match or even outpace current broadband bandwidth. Eventually FWA could be used to bring broadband services to remote areas where nothing exists or to places where broadband is currently extremely limited.
Zyxel Communications has announced a 5G new radio (NR) FWA product portfolio for service providers that is expected to be in mass production in the second quarter of this year.
Zyxel’s portfolio of FWA devices includes:
- 5G NR outdoor router
- 5G NR indoor router
- 5G NR portable router
These devices incorporate the latest in Wi-Fi 6 technology to eliminate dead zones and perform high speeds in homes or businesses.
“5G NR offers the opportunity for service providers to create a bigger pipeline, faster data streaming and ultra-low latency, all of which subscribers want and need, especially during a time where more people are logging on from home than ever before,” said Karsten Gewecke, senior VP, head of EMEA regional BU at Zyxel Communications.
