Nokia expands 5G network in Australia with low band spectrum

06 May 2020

Nokia is working with Vodafone Hutchison Australia (VHA) to deploy low-band new radio 700 MHz spectrum, complementing its 3.5 GHz 5G rollout.

The deployment was a field test on a 5G network in Australia and the Asia-Pacific region. Once the network is live, the 700 MHz spectrum will be used to improve indoor coverage and deliver 5G connectivity to a wider area of coverage.

The network will use Nokia’s AirScale product and will be tested on VHA’s 5G sites in and around Parramatta in Western Sydney. Nokia and VHA will repurpose the 700 MHz spectrum to 5G 700 MHz for the delivery of new 5G services while still using the existing 4G network.

Vodafone said the 700 MHz spectrum will complement existing 5G network plans and help deliver the benefits of 5G’s speed, capacity and coverage.
