Terra Drone Europe, a division of Terra Drone Corp. based in Japan, and Unilever, the British-Dutch consumer goods giant, are working on a pilot project that would deliver ice cream via drone.

The project is taking place in New York where a Terra drone will deliver Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cups to pre-determined destinations. The project is part of Unilever’s ice cream delivery service called Ice Cream Now.

A multi-copter drone was fitted with a delivery box that can carry three Ben & Jerry’s ice cream cups and the predetermined flight path the drone will follow is inside the Unilever U.S. facility.

Ice Cream Now was launched by Unilever in 2017 as a delivery service for ice cream and it has grown into a worldwide business in just a few years. With regulations around future drone flights expected to become more flexible, the consumer goods company is preparing for a drone logistics service that will deliver products to more customers faster.

“We want to solve serious problems in the logistics field, such as carbon dioxide emissions, with drones,” said Yuki Ueno, director of Terra Drone Europe, in a statement. “As deregulation progresses worldwide, drone delivery services will also increase.”
