Telecommunications companies SK Telecom and Swisscom have rolled out what they claim is the world’s first 5G roaming service, in their home countries of South Korea and Switzerland, respectively.
SK Telecom turned on its 5G network in March; Swisscom rolled out its 5G network in April. Now, SK Telecom’s customers using the Samsung Galaxy S10 5G will be able to use 5G service through Swisscom while visiting Switzerland, thanks to a new software path. In the future, SK Telecom plans to provide roaming service for LG V50 users and expand roaming to other countries that have 5G networks.
Meanwhile, Swisscom users will have roaming 5G service in South Korea without incurring any additional costs, and also in Finland, made possible by an agreement with Elisa, a Finnish telecom.
