Amazon and Volkswagen team to build automotive cloud platform

02 April 2019

Amazon Web Services (AWS) and Volkswagen have formed a multi-year agreement to build the Volkswagen Industrial Cloud — a digital platform to transform the company’s manufacturing and logistics processes.

Under the deal, Volkswagen will use AWS’ portfolio of services including internet of things (IoT), machine learning, analytics and computer services to increase plant efficiency and uptime as well as improve flexibility and vehicle quality.

The cloud will bring together real-time data from all of Volkswagen’s 122 manufacturing plants to manage the overall effectiveness of assembly equipment. This will also allow the company to track parts and vehicles. The AWS tools will be used to detect, collect, organize and run analytics on the plant floor.

AWS’ IoT services will be used to optimize production and improve process efficiencies. Volkswagen will also use Amazon SageMaker, a service to provide developers and data scientists with the ability to build, train and deploy machine learning models and to optimize the operation of machinery and equipment in all of its plants. Volkswagen will use AWS Outposts to provide functionality between the factory floor and the cloud for latency sensitive applications.
