APEC 2019: Not just a designer's conference

14 February 2019

This year’s edition of the Applied Power Electronics Conference, better known as APEC, will be held March 17-21, 2019, at the Anaheim Convention Center in Anaheim, California. Focused on issues of interest to the practicing power electronics engineer, the event includes a variety of sessions and seminars plus an exposition floor with a wide variety of exhibitor companies.

According to conference organizers, APEC is appropriate for designers of power electronic components and systems including power supplies, DC-DC converters, motor drives, uninterruptable power supplies and inverters. But they add that “this is not just a designer’s conference.” The intended audience also includes OEMs that use power supplies and DC-DC converters; manufacturers and suppliers of power electronics components and assemblies; and manufacturing, quality and compliance engineers.

More than 4,500 professionals from around the world are expected to attend. The 2018 show featured 292 exhibiting companies, with 50 countries represented. This year’s plenary sessions will include a focus on robotics applications; zero-emission powertrains and fuel cell engines; medical devices; and an overview of university research programs in power electronics. The APEC website includes a full schedule including technical and industry sessions, professional education seminars and more.

There is some fun in store, too: APEC’s Micromouse Competition challenges participants to design, build and program robotic mice that will race to achieve the shortest time as they navigate through a maze.
