This Augmented Reality Tool Measures if Your Bag Can Fit in Airplane Overheads

21 September 2018

It has happened to probably everyone. Traveling on an airplane, you realize the bag you packed for the overhead bin is just too big and won’t fit.

Travel search engine Kayak has developed a new augmented reality (AR) tool that may prevent such problems in the future. The AR tool measures bags with the dimensions of carry-on luggage differing from airline to airline. The tool helps travelers recognize whether or not their luggage will fit in the overhead bins no matter what the airline and before arriving at the airport.

To measure a bag, open a flight search in the Kayak app and click “new bag measurement tool.” Passengers are directed to scan the floor to calibrate measurements and then move the camera around the bag to capture its size. The tool then alerts passengers of the bag’s exact measurements and if they can bring it on a flight as a carry-on or if it needs to be checked. The tool compares baggage fee policies for all tracked airlines in one place.

Currently, the app is only available on iOS platforms.
