Embedded processor house ARM has for the first time publicly disclosed its CPU roadmap through 2020.

The company recently introduced its Cortex-A76 embedded processor in May that featured 35% gains in performance compared to previous generations. The follow up to the Cortex-A76 is codenamed “Deimos” and will be available to ARM partners later this year. Deimos will feature ARM DynamIQ technology, optimized for 7 nm nodes, and is expected to deliver a 15 percent or higher increase in compute performance, ARM said.

In 2019, ARM will introduce a CPU codenamed “Hercules” that will also be based on DynamIQ technology and optimized for both 5 nm and 7 nm nodes. ARM said this CPU will improve power and area efficiency by at least 10%.

The roadmap for CPUs is designed to take advantage of the upcoming deployment of 5G networks as well as the next generation of laptops and Chromebooks over the next five years, ARM said.

The company’s ARM Artisan Physical IP platform and ARM POP IP will be updated as well in order to allow foundry partners to use the new CPUs from 130 nm down to 5 nm. ARM POP IP has already helped to enable laptop-class performance in 7 nm system-on-chips based on the Cortex-A76 processor to push the clock-speed past 3.0 GHz and up to 3.3 GHz.
