IoT Platform Lets Developers Choose Their Own Wireless Modules

06 August 2018

Ayla Networks has updated its device management and application enablement platform for the Internet of Things that allows open wireless modules choices to connect to the Ayla IoT cloud and enables the creation of enterprise applications that use IoT device data.

Ayla said a portable software agent cuts the time needed to get to market with IoT initiatives by letting manufacturers select any cellular or WiFi module and have it connect to Ayla’s IoT cloud. New application enablement capabilities make it faster and easier to build both mobile and web-based enterprise applications to take advantage of IoT data, the company said.

IoT software agents typically have to be built and certified to work with a specific chip and module type — a process that could take a year or more and involve significant certification overhead. Ayla’s solution gets around this problem by enabling connectivity to the Ayla IoT cloud from any cellular or WiFi module meaning no lengthy process or certification is needed for each chip or module variation.

This bring-your-own approach to IoT modules allows IoT developers to focus on differentiating their product offerings to server multiple and expand markets instead of spending time determining the right module hardware selection, Ayla said.

The portable agent includes source code, reference implementation, a porting guide and a test suit for both cellular and WiFi solutions.
