Indoor/outdoor lighting vendor Acuity Brands Inc. has acquired Quebec, Canada-based Distech Controls Inc. in order to advance Acuity's smart buildings and smart cities market.
Distech is an energy management and building automation vendor that provides products for the integration of lighting, HVAC, access control, closed circuit television and related systems. Acuity said it would use the Distech technology to enhance its solid-state lighting portfolio for end-to-end optimization of a smart buildings' lighting systems.
The deal, valued at about $298 million, will pair Acuity's smart lighting and control systems with the building management portfolio of Distech to deliver digital lighting solutions and other indoor environment products. Acuity said smart buildings are evolving with the use of digital networks as a way to create enhanced productivity and increase efficiency and safety. Technology is allowing lighting, temperature, ventilation, access control and fire safety systems to be converted into a single digital ecosystem, opening up new opportunities in smart buildings and smart cities, according to the company.
Distech reported net sales of 70 million Canadian dollars (about $54.8 million) last year. Its five core markets are on pace for a five-year annualized growth rate of more than 25 percent, Acuity said. The deal is expected to be completed in the second quarter of this year.
