China's Actions Semiconductor Co. Ltd. has introduced a 28nm quad-core application processor chipset targeted at the high volume consumer electronics space.
The application processor is Actions first OWL series chipset to be based on a 28nm process technology and is pin-to-pin compatible with the ATM7039c, a 40nm version of the same device. The new ATM7039 and ATM7059 feature a quad-core ARM Cortex A9 CPU, a PowerVR GPU core from Imagination Technologies, 2K by 4K high resolution decoding and support for high definition HVEC/H.265 video encoding, the Chinese fabless chipmaker said.
Additional features include a 1.6 Ghz single CPU speed, longer battery life, support for the upcoming Android Lollipop operating system and enhanced processing speed. Actions is targeted at low and mid-tier Android-based tablets, OTT STBs, smart monitors, ultrabooks, digital signage and other cloud-connected devices.
Actions debuted the new chipset at the Global Sources’ China Sourcing Fair during the Asia World Expo in Hong Kong recently.
Dr. Zheny Zhou, CEO of Actions, said in a statement that the 28nm chipsets “provide users with a great user experience” for consumer electronic devices that require “a very attractive performance-to-price and performance-to-power ratios.” Zhou added that he expects the chipsets to be adopted by branded as well as whitebox consumer manufacturers.
