Smart home vendor Aqara has introduced its first outdoor surveillance camera that also works as a smart home hub and on-device artificial intelligence (AI).

Called the Camera Hub G5 Pro, the camera provides security for homeowners in the day and at night with 2.6K quad HD recording with true color night vision. This allows images to be clear regardless of light levels, Aqara said.

The on-device AI is used to capture events around the home and alert homeowners to potential threats like lingering individuals or package theft. It also triggers automation to deter intruders. Aqara said the camera works with many smart home platforms and supports the RTSP protocol to include it in existing smart security systems.

However, the device also serves as a multi-protocol hub for outdoors. This allows homeowners to expand the reach and reliability of smart home outdoor networks. It can connect and manage not just Aqara accessories but also third-party Matter devices. Matter is the universal protocol that allows multiple smart home devices from multiple vendors to work together in one app.

Features

The camera provides four-megapixel resolution and a 133-degree field of view for clear images in low-light conditions. It also can capture up to four times more light with its f/1.0 aperture and has a dimmable spotlight and a 100 dB speaker for extra security to act as an intruder deterrent via two-way audio communication.

The on-camera neural processing unit is designed for object detection and sound detection. It can detect faces, vehicles, packages, animals and even camera lens obstructions, Aqara said. Because the AI capabilities are on-camera, it can still trigger events and automation during internet outages.

The camera also supports end-to-end encryption for live and recorded video. This allows the homeowners only to view the footage. An eMMC storage also syncs to cloud storage services.
