Next-generation multi-axis sensor for precision robotic applications
Robotic systems are increasingly being used to perform more complex human-like tasks that require precise position, orientation, force, torque and pressure control. This is enabled by the use of micro-electro-mechanical systems (MEMS), which incorporate a variety of sensors and actuators for precision feedback and control. For example, to grip an object, a robotic system might first use position, orientation or vision sensors for rough positioning. However, if there are variations in the object size, weight, shape or surface finish, the object might not be properly gripped, moved or placed into its desired position or orientation.
XJCSENSOR, a leading manufacturer of force sensors and force-control solutions, has introduced a MEMS sensor that provides multi-axis force and torque feedback. These sensors can measure forces and torques in six axes, which allows robotic systems to make fine dynamic adjustments in real time to accommodate variations in objects and environmental conditions. This transforms robotic capabilities by enabling human-like “hand-eye coordination” strategies, where rough positioning can be accomplished with vision or position sensors, and force and torque sensors can be used to develop the appropriate grip and finely place an object.

The XJCSENSOR force/torque sensor shown in Figure 1 is manufactured using a new glass-fusion MEMS strain-gauge process that offers significant advantages over traditional adhesive bonding technology. This technique can be fully automated and allows for true large-scale manufacturing. The strain gauge process provides several performance advantages, including improved durability, greater shock tolerance, lower thermal drift, higher sensitivity and wider frequency response.
XJCSENSOR force/torque sensor is an excellent fit for humanoid robots, collaborative robots, medical and surgical devices, precision automation, dexterous end-effector and research and development platforms.
