As many companies are struggling in the silicon carbide (SiC) market, Microchip Technology is expanding its role in the market with a new agreement with power management vendor Delta Electronics Inc.
The companies will collaborate to use Microchip’s mSiC devices and technology in Delta’s design to develop SiC solutions for sustainable energy products.
The collaboration comes as companies in this sector are under intense competition from Chinese vendors selling SiC semiconductors at up to half the price of the leading companies. This, along with a softening in the electric vehicle (EV) market, led to the leading vendor in the SiC market, Wolfspeed, to declare bankruptcy.
Additionally, Japanese SiC vendor JS Foundry also filed for bankruptcy citing similar reasons to Wolfspeed.
About the agreement
Microchip said that SiC is increasingly becoming a solution for power devices due to its wide-bandgap properties. This allows designs to be smaller and more efficient while lowering system costs.
Microchip’s mSiC products include SiC MOSFETs, diodes and gate drivers with standard, modified and custom options.
Delta will use these semiconductors to accelerate advanced technology devices for high-growth segments like:
- AI
- Mobility
- Automation
- Infrastructure
