Keysight Technologies Inc., NTT Corp. and NTT Innovative Devices Corp. have achieved what they claim is a record-breaking data rate using sub-THz frequencies.
The data rate was achieved using Keysight’s vector component analyzer (VCA) in conjunction with NTT’s and NTT Innovative Devices’ J-band indium phosphide (InP)-based power amplifier. The companies were able to demonstrate the power amplifier’s effectiveness in the 300 GHz frequency band. At a power level of +9.1 dBm, they achieved a 280 Gbps data rate at 0 dBm power output.
The companies said this is the highest data rate reported in the 300 GHz band.
Why it matters
Due to the advancement of 6G, AI and autonomous driving technologies, demand for wide bandwidth capabilities is growing. Sub-THz frequencies will be needed for high-speed wireless communication and precision radar sensing.
These systems must be validated with high-quality modulated signals for development and deployment but achieving high-quality signals in this frequency range has been challenging because of the amplifying signals and managing distortion at higher power levels.
Test and measurement tools are one way to help achieve these signals, the companies said.
“At NTT, we are consistently advancing the limits of carrier frequency and integration within radio systems,” said Hirokazu Takenouchi, VP and head of NTT Device Technology Laboratories. “These developments are pushing the boundaries of what can be achieved in wireless communication systems. The test and measurement industry is crucial in meeting the complex characterization needs of our devices. We have collaborated closely with Keysight throughout our design and verification stages. Keysight consistently provides innovative solutions in both its software and hardware platforms.”
