LG Innotek has introduced what it claims is the world’s first automotive 5G communications modules with satellite connectivity. This will allow vehicles to have high-speed communications anywhere.
The third generation 5G communication module is a component that is installed inside a vehicle and enables data communication with network infrastructure such as base stations and satellites using 5G cellular technology. LG Innotek called this an essential component to software-defined vehicles and autonomous driving.
Even if the module becomes disconnected from terrestrial base stations, it can maintain communications via satellite, LG said. This was previously not available in SATCOM modules on narrowband channels. The third-generation module delivers data transmissions speeds that are hundreds of times faster than existing 5G SATCOM modules.
Because of this, LG Innotek said vehicles can send and receive large volumes of data at high speeds, anytime or anywhere. This includes:
- Voice
- Audio
- Images
- Videos
- Games
LG Innotek gave an example of a vehicle in a remote area without communication infrastructure or that has been damaged by accident or natural disaster. The vehicle will be able to connect via satellite and receive emergency rescue requests in the case of a natural disaster or vehicle status information can be sent to third parties to improve driver safety or provide prompt assistance.
