Chinese smart device vendor Xiaomi is set to debut its first electric vehicle (EV) on March 28, a move that will launch the smartphone manufacturer into the highly competitive electric automotive sector.
Xiaomi CEO Lei Jun said the launch takes place just three years after it announced it was entering the EV market.
The first vehicle under the Xiaomi Motors brand will be a sedan called SU7 and Jun said previously he plans for the company to become a top producer of EVs in China and worldwide.
The EV market is already crowded as not just traditional automotive OEMs have pledged to become all-electric in the next 10 to 15 years -- Telsa Motors is the leader in the market along with BYD, Nio and Li Auto, which already serve the world's largest car market in China.
Jun said the SU7 will be capable of delivering acceleration speeds faster than Tesla cars and Porsche EVs. Reports indicate the vehicle will share the operating system with Xiaomi’s smartphones and other electronic devices to appeal to consumers and drivers that already use its products.
"Xiaomi's cars are going from zero to one in a very different growth stage and facing very different user expectations compared to when Xiaomi's smartphones went from zero to one 14 years ago," Jun said.
