MWC 2024: 7th generation 5G modem unveiled by Qualcomm

27 February 2024

At Mobile World Congress 2024, Qualcomm Technologies Inc. introduced the seventh generation of its 5G modem-to-antenna solution.

Called the Snapdragon X80 5G modem-RF system, the chip integrates a dedicated 5G artificial intelligence (AI) processor and 5G architecture. Specifically, the 5G technology includes what Qualcomm claims is the first 5G modem with fully integrated NB-NTN satellite communication support. Other features include:

  • Six-antenna architecture for smartphones
  • Six times carrier aggregation
  • AI-based millimeter wave (mmWave) range extension for fixed wireless access (FWA) customer premise equipment (CPE)

Additionally, the Snapdragon X80 includes AI innovations based on a dedicated tensor accelerator that improves data speeds, latency, quality of service, coverage, location accuracy, spectrum efficiency, power efficiency and multi-antenna management, Qualcomm said.

“The Snapdragon X80 modem-RF system sets the stage for 5G Advanced and the era of intelligent computing everywhere,” said Durga Malladi, senior VP and GM of technology planning and edge solutions at Qualcomm. “Leveraging AI is critical to the future of connectivity, this latest milestone underscores Qualcomm Technologies’ leadership at the intersection of cutting-edge AI and advanced modem-RF technology.”

MWC 2024 takes place this week in Barcelona, Spain.
