APEC 2024: How to improve switching in solid-state relays

28 February 2024

Infineon Technologies AG has introduced a family of solid-state isolators (iSSI) that use coreless transformer technology to achieve faster and more reliable switching with circuit protection for solid state relays (SSRs).

Infineon introduced the family at this week’s 2024 Applied Power Electronics Conference (APEC) in Long Beach, California.

The iSSI family allows driving OptiMOS and CoolMOS to reduce the power dissipation of SSRs using silicon-controlled rectifier and Triac switches. Infineon said the improvements to SSRs make the device applicable for advanced battery management, energy storage and renewable energy as well as industrial and building automation systems.

Additional features to the iSSIs when paired with CoolMOS include:

  • Switching design with a lower RDS
  • 20 times greater energy transfer
  • Longer lifespans
  • Lower cost of ownership
  • 70% lower power dissipation
  • 40% lower turn-on power
  • Increased reliability due to no moving parts

APEC 2024 takes place Feb. 25-29.
