Wing, the drone delivery arm of Alphabet, has unveiled its latest drone for deliveries that will allow for larger orders to be carried out via the aircraft.
The drone can be streamlined for large orders such as an entire ingredients list for a dinner meal.
Wing said that its research into deliveries found that 70% of all U.S. orders can be carried out by one Wing aircraft. However, 30% of deliveries are better serviced with an additional aircraft that can handle these larger orders.
The move follows the announcement that Wing and Zipline will be the main delivery options for Walmart’s expansion in the Dallas-Fort Worth, Texas, area.
Wing has completed more than 350,000 Wing deliveries across three continents and earlier last year introduced an automated system to support high volume logistics via drone delivery for both rural regions and urban metro areas.
Wing said the new aircraft doubles the amount of payload its existing fleet of commercially operational aircraft. The first Wing drone can carry about 2.5 lb, the new aircraft will be able to make the same round-trip range of 12 miles and cruise at about 65 mph but carry a payload of up to 5 lb.
