Owl Autonomous Imaging’s 3D high-definition thermal ranging camera with computer vision was named the winner in the Optical and Camera category of the 2023 Best of Sensors Awards during the Sensors Converge 2023 trade show.

The camera is designed for the automotive sector to help meet the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration’s (NHTSA) mandates for pedestrian safety at night.

The thermal camera uses hardware and artificial intelligence (AI) technology to see warm objects such as humans, animals and bicyclists on the road to classify them as to what they are. This then allows the vehicle to automatically hit the brakes or steer around them.

“Pedestrian safety, especially for night-time and urban driving, is the critical milestone for the automotive industry’s next-generation vehicles,” said Chuck Gershman, CEO & Co-founder of Owl Autonomous Imaging.

Sensors Converge 2023 takes place this week in Santa Clara, California.
