GlobalFoundries becomes DoD trusted supplier

01 June 2023

The U.S. government has accredited GlobalFoundries’ (GFs') chip fab in Malta, New York, as a Category 1A trusted supplier allowing it to manufacture secure semiconductors for aerospace and defense applications.

The U.S. Department of Defense (DoD) through the Defense Microelectronics Activity (DMEA), Trusted Access Program Office (TAPO) accreditation will include those manufactured on GF’s 12 nm FinFET technologies to be used in DoD systems on land, air, sea and space.

The accreditation gives GF’s semiconductor manufacturing capabilities stringent security processes, equipment and oversight in place to accept and protect sensitive information and manufactured chips to ensure they are secure and uncompromised.

“The secure manufacturing of semiconductors is critical to safeguarding the confidentiality, integrity and reliability of the technology that powers our modern world, and nowhere is this more important than aerospace, defense, and critical infrastructure systems,” said Dr. Thomas Caulfield, president and CEO of GF.

Over the past two years, GF has been working with the DoD to build semiconductors at its Malta facility including a contract for 45 nm silicon-on-insulator (SOI) platform. GF also won a chip contract for $117 million to supply the DoD to supply semiconductors for national security systems.

“This accreditation at the Malta site will enable the Department to have access to the most advanced ASIC technology node available from a DMEA accredited Trusted Supplier,” said Nicholas Martin, director of DMEA. “Accrediting GlobalFoundries to manufacture our country’s sensitive chips strengthens the domestic microelectronics industrial base and our nation’s efforts to fortify its semiconductor supply chain for national and economic security.”
