Expanding cloud computing capabilities for better performance

18 May 2023

Enterprise software vendor SAP SE is partnering with Intel Corp. to expand cloud computing capabilities to enable significantly higher performance and flexibility.

Using 4th generation Intel Xeon scalable processors, the goal is to develop greater scalability, agility and consolidation of existing SAP software landscapes. Intel said it can enable up to 38% CPU power savings using its Xeon processors and SAP’s software while also benefiting from flexibility in the cloud.

Intel enables current virtual machine sizes up to 24 TB with a goal to ramp up to VM sizes of 32TB with the SAP solution. The combination of technologies will also help to ensure security and reliability for SAP customers, Intel said.

“Many of the world’s largest SAP S/4 HANA systems run on Intel architecture,” said Christoph Schell, chief commercial officer at Intel. “The new cloud computing experience powered by 4th Gen Xeon will not only help SAP customers meet growing compliance and security requirements, it will also enable them to apply advanced technologies for faster, more secure, integrated business processes.”

Beyond the collaboration for larger instance types in the cloud, the two companies are also exploring use cases that leverage confidential computing for SAP Hana Cloud, the company’s database-as-a-service offering. This is designed to enhance data security and encryption using Microsoft Azure confidential computing.
