Sony Semiconductor Solutions Corp. (SSS) has taken a minority investment in Raspberry Pi Ltd.

The arrangement provides a development platform for SSS’ edge artificial intelligence (AI) devices to Raspberry Pi’s global user base.

"Our goal is to provide new value to a variety of industries and support them in solving issues using our innovative edge AI sensing technology built around image sensors," said Terushi Shimizu, president and CEO of SSS.

The partnership will bring Rasperry Pi into SSS’ Aitrios platform, which supports the development of solutions using edge AI devices. This will then be brought to Raspberry Pi’s developer community of engineers, designers and makers.

Previously, the two companies worked together in a contract manufacturing relationship as well as in the provision of image sensors and other semiconductor products.

For Raspberry Pi, the deal will expand its AI products for users to build new machine-learning applications at the edge.
