The single board computer (SBC) offers a complete computer assembled on a single circuit board, with microprocessor, memory, input/output and other features required of a functional computer. The flexible format, encompassing designs from embedded personal computers to simple maker modules, affords design engineers a great starting point for new product development.

Makers value SBCs for low-cost, high-performance, software support and standard format benefits. Professional engineers also cite cost and ease of use but point to prototyping as the most important reason for selecting SBCs.

Pre-configured connectivity is a primary strength of low-cost SBCs and a key driver for the maker community. Professionals also value this feature, with industrial automation and control identified as the preferred application and internet of things ranked as the second largest use. Other end applications where SBCs are used include audio and video, radio and broadcasting, scientific instrumentation and research, and education.
