AMD is seeking to accelerate its networking, security, storage and other services for cloud, enterprise and edge applications with a $1.9 billion acquisition of Pensando.
Pensando’s portfolio includes distributed services platforms such as high-performance, fully programmable packet processors and software stacks. Its products are already deployed to enterprise businesses such as Goldman Sachs, IBM Cloud, Microsoft Azure and Oracle Cloud.
The distributed services platform will join AMD’s CPU, GPU, field programmable gate array (FPGA) and adaptive system-on-chip products.
The distributed services platform with programmable packet processor can be distributed through a network to accelerate infrastructure services simultaneously, offloading workloads from the CPU and increasing overall system performance. With the software stack, the platform demonstrates between eight times and 13 times greater performance compared to competitive solutions, AMD said.
As part of the acquisition, Prem Jain, CEO of Pensando, will join AMD as part of the Data Center Solutions Group. The deal is expected to close in the second quarter of this year following antitrust conditions.
