IBM has expanded its 5G portfolio for hybrid cloud computing with the acquisition of Sentaca, a telecom consulting vendor.
Sentaca will be integrated into IBM Consulting, a hybrid cloud services business that provide opportunities for companies looking to move into 5G, internet of the things and streaming. The platform helps to accelerate creation and delivery of new services.
Sentaca provides assets and client relationships that will help to strengthen IBM’s position as a systems integrator for emerging network and 5G applications.
IBM has acquired more than 20 companies in the past few years including 10 in the consulting sector alone to bolster its hybrid and artificial intelligence capabilities. The Sentaca acquisition follows other consulting firm deals such as Nordcloud, Taos, BoxBoat and SXiQ conducted in 2021.
"Our goal is to help modern networks thrive in an open, hybrid cloud environment that will bring edge and 5G to life for enterprises and consumers," said John Granger, senior vice president at IBM Consulting. "The proliferation of mobile devices, wireless connectivity and new media platforms is driving convergence among telco, media and entertainment, which makes our acquisition of Sentaca all the more valuable for our clients."
IBM said that 91% of communications services providers expect 5G edge computing will improve financial expectations in the next five years. Hybrid cloud computing is expected to grow at an estimated $50 billion annually by 2025.
