Embedded SIM technology critical for mass rollout of cellular IoT

14 November 2019

Telit has introduced a module-software embedded SIM technology that supports 4G LTE-M and NB-IoT connectivity for mass rollout of cellular internet of things (IoT) technology.

The technology is considered to be a replacement or a complement for manufacturers of cellular-connected devices using a traditional SIM card and tray. Using the IoT modules with the SIM technology reduces manufacturing costs, Telit said.

The SimWISE embedded SIM technology works in low power wide area offerings (LPWA), such as LTE-M and NB-IoT. The technology works with OneEdge, a next generation cellular IoT module software suite with pre-packaged deployment and management tools for 5G.

Additionally, the embedded SIM technology eliminates logistic costs associated with control, stock and shipping of pre-provisioned SIM cards and control costs created by physical visits to swap SIM cards.

Telit said the benefits of SimWISE for cellular connected IoT deployments include:

  • Low cost of ownership.
  • Ability to quickly swap mobile network operators.
  • Improved product reliability.
  • Single SKU for connected products.

What's the IoT security level of this SIM? I hears that security can be quite an issue when dealing with LPWA devices.
