China continues to lead the world in 5G connectivity as the country has now deployed 4.65 million 5G base stations, according to new data from the Chinese Ministry of Industry and Information Technology.
The information, which was updated through Sept. 23, 2025, said this accounted for about 36.3% of the total number of mobile base stations nationwide.
The MIIT said the increase in 5G mobile stations is the result of more Chinese consumers adopting 5G services with the number of users growing to 1.15 billion, a net increase of 140 million from the end of last year. This accounts for about 63.4% of total mobile phone users, MIIT said.
Why it matters
Chinese 5G mobile base station is by far the greatest roll out of the technology in the world. By some estimates, China has about a 60% market share of 5G base stations globally. The next closest country is India with a little less than 500,000 5G base stations.
By comparison, the U.S. has rolled out about 150,000 to 200,000 5G base stations by 2023.
