While traditional PCs remain dominant, their days may be numbered as artificial intelligence (AI) PCs will rapidly grow in popularity leading to a four times shipment increase or about 60% of total PC sales by 2028, according to new data by Statista and Canalys.
This growth will come from both the consumer and professional sectors
According to the report, as edge computing rises, AI PC has become a right solution to improve the performance of autonomous systems, smart home devices and internet of things applications. This is happening due to the ability of AI PCs for enhanced productivity and can handle tasks like:
- Machine learning
- Data analysis
- Efficient work
Generative AI applications are also fueling demands for AI PCs with more users searching for data using various AI bots online. AI PCs will allow users to ask their PC rather than going to a browser for answers. These computers will also allow users to use AI for tasks and operations autonomously.
The forecast
Statista and Canalyst show that AI PCs are expected to account for 19% of all PC sales in 2024. This will rise to 60% of all PC sales by 2027. By 2028, 205 million AI Pcs will be sold in 2028, or four times more than this year.
The companies said the surging demand for AI PCs will lead to a recovery in the PC industry after three years of plunging sales. Global sales of PCs is forecast to hit $220 billion in 2024, about $10 billion less than three years ago. With the rise of AI PCs, revenues will rise $27 billion in the next four years to hit $247 billion in 2028.
