As part of the Biden Administration’s goal to minimize risks associated with artificial intelligence (AI), the U.S. Department of Commerce (DOC) through the U.S. National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) will establish the U.S. Artificial Intelligence Safety Institute (USAISI).
The organization is being created as part of the U.S. government’s plan to stimulate innovations for AI while simultaneously preventing AI from being developed that threatens national security.
The USAISI will specifically develop standards for safety, security and testing of AI models. Additionally, the organization will create other standards for authenticating AI-generated content as well as providing testing environments to evaluate emerging AI risks, DOC said.
Gina Raimonda, DOC secretary, said the ultimate goal is “to manage the risk and harness the benefits of AI” but also coordinate “with federal agencies across government and in lockstep with our international partners and allies.”
NIST will work with partners in academia, industry, government and civil society to advance the standards for AI safety. This includes the AI Safety Institute in the U.K.
