At this week’s IAA Mobility 2021 tradeshow, Unikie, a Finnish automotive technology developer, showcased an automated parking solution using data and machine learning to park the vehicle completely independently.
At the show, BMW, Ford, Jaguar-Land Rover and Mercedes Benz partnered with the German Automobile Industry Association and Unikie to showcase the smart parking initiative.
The automated valet parking (AVP) mobility feature will bring cars into a structure where they will be parked, washed and charged automatically without a driver. The data and machine learning tools help connect the parking garage to sensors and cloud computing to allow vehicles to be aware of their surroundings.
“Our solution differs from others in that we use lidar for real-time observation of the environment, while in others the solution is based on cameras. In parking garages, the absolute advantage of a lidar is that the solution also works in the dark, unlike cameras," said Seppo Kuula, CEO of Unikie.
The smart parking initiative was developed in collaboration with infrastructure vendor Cariad and automotive developer Bosch Mobility, Continental and Kopernikus Autonomous Driving Solutions.
At IAA Mobility, the automated parking service was showcased to exhibition guests, demonstrating how the service operates and how drivers and passengers can benefit from smart parking features.
IAA Mobility runs through Sept. 12 in Germany.
