Nokia has developed what it claims is the first liquid cooling 5G base station solution to be deployed anywhere in the world.
The company is working with Finnish mobile operator Elisa to potentially reduce the energy expenses of its base station by 30% and CO2 emissions by about 80%.
Liquid-cooled sites are silent and require zero maintenance. They can also be 50% smaller and 30% lighter than standard active air conditioning units. Operators and base station owners can achieve savings and potentially longer base station component life.
Liquid cooling base stations could help in achieving a more sustainable planet, Nokia said. About 90% of energy consumed by base stations is converted to waste heat, however with a heat re-use option where waste heat is converted and repurposed, energy savings can be achieved.
Nokia said it is committed to decreasing emissions from its operations by 41% by 2030 with 46% less energy used on average in customer base station sites.
