Assembly and test company Siliconware Precision Industries Co. Ltd. (Hsinchu, Taiwan) has acquired the buildings and attached equipment of a former 300mm wafer fab belonging to ProMOS Technologies Inc. for NT$6.4 billion (about $213 million).
The wafer fab has been idle for at three years. ProMOS was one of a group of Taiwanese companies that attempted to break into DRAM manufacturing through a series of technology partnerships with the likes Infineon, Elpida Memory and Hynix Semiconductor, ultimately without success.
SPIL is expected to use the fab space to develop its 2.5D and 3D packaging technology and services. Much of the equipment that had been in the wafer fab has already been sold to Globalfoundries in 2013, reports said.
