Qorvo has introduced what it claims is the first single chip intelligent battery management solution for 20 cell systems.
Called the PAC22140 and PAC25140 power application controller (PAC), the two devices enable intelligent battery management solutions (BMS) for a range of industrial, e-mobility and battery backup applications.
Qorvo said the PAC devices save 50% of PCB space and lower total bill of materials costs by 30%. This reduces time to market by leveraging Qorvo’s hardware and firmware ecosystem, the company said. Additionally, the devices integrate:
- Analog and power management peripherals
- A 32-bit Arm Cortex M0 or M4F microcontroller
- Cell balancing, monitoring and protection or 10s-20s battery packs
- Programmable-gain differential amplifier
- Multiple 16-bit Sigma-Delta analog to digital converters (ADCs) for current and voltage sensing
- 10-bit SAR ADC
- Single supply 145 V buck DC/DC controller
The PAC devices provide a low power hibernate mode of less than 3 µA, enabling long storage time with wakeup from push button, timer or charger detection. The integrated high-voltage buck reduces thermal issues with support of a 5 V regulated supply up to 22 mA. An integrated 3.3V LDO supplies up to 90 mA for additional peripherals, Qorvo said.
