Semtech Corp. has launched its CopperEdge portfolio, a quad channel 112 Gbps PAM4 linear equalizer using copper cable and backplane interconnects for use in next generation 400G and 800G data center interconnects.
The CopperEdge GN8112 PAM4 linear equalizer will help to meet higher bandwidth and throughput demands of next generation data center interconnects, Semtech said. Passive copper cables can only enable reaches of up to 1.5 meters, limiting the use cases for the copper cables in data centers to 112 Gbps.
Simultaneously, this has created high demand for active copper cables that extend the copper cable reach to allow for high-volume switch-to-server connections, Semtech said. CopperEdge GN8112 is designed to enable low cost, manufacturable active copper cables that can deliver reaches up to 5 meters over copper twin axial cable assembly.
This reach allows these cables to service the large volume 400G and 800G data center interconnects while still at low power. Semtech said this will be needed in cloud computing, artificial intelligence, high performance computing and more.
The CopperEdge GN8112 PAM4 linear equalizer joins a host of other PAM4 devices from Semtech including its Tri-Edge and FiberEdge lines.
